About me

Dr Alison McLaughlin CPsychol AFBpsS Chartered Counselling Psychologist

Well hello there!

If you’ve got this far, I appreciate you dropping by and am glad to have this opportunity to share a bit about me. It can be another helpful dimension in when you’re deciding upon talking therapy.

I finished my counselling skills training in 2010 and then my postgrad in Psychology the following year. At that time, I was working in money advice, where I ultimately spent over a decade working with a range of groups to mitigate against the effects of financial exclusion.

Advice work introduced me to so many inspirational people who were dealing with illness, life, loss and challenges. It was a desire to use my skills and work effectively in helping relationships that nudged me from money advice to psychologist in 2018.

I might have given up the role of advice worker but I haven’t forgotten how complex our lives are, and how fragile. Mental health can be affected by so many factors beyond our control or foresight. I am always humbled by the human capacity for growth and determination and will to thrive.

My core therapeutic model is person-centred where I fundamentally hold the view that everyone is just trying their best to make their way in this life and unpredictable world. The capacity for living life to its fullest potential - whatever the circumstances - is what I aim to help with.

I’ve worked with people who have experienced loss, trauma and illness, including end of life. I’ve worked in private, public and third sectors and have experience in working with long-term conditions, wellness in the workplace, mental health recovery and dementia.

I have had the opportunity to work in a range of healthcare settings, including more recently online, since we all decamped there. It’s always good to meet in person too, so if Cumbernauld is handy for you, it’s where you’ll find me.
